Queensland Police have taken delivery
of their first seven Isuzu D-MAX crew cabs and
are kitting them out for various special applications.
The supply contract is the first for Isuzu Ute
Australia with any police department and comprises
five LS-M 4x4s and two LS 4x2s, all automatic.
Two D-MAXs have already been fitted out with
prisoner pods and another two will
be similarly kitted. These vehicles will be used
exclusively for offender transport and are equipped
with an auxiliary air-conditioner to service the
pod.
Strong, lag-free torque delivery from low and
medium speeds, its stable wide-track handling
and its lower centre of gravity with high-ride
suspension lend D-MAX LS variants particularly
well to this role.
Unique
Queensland Police is unique among Australian
state and territory police forces in that it buys
its own vehicles and maintains its own vehicle
engineering works. This differs from the other
area commands which contract these functions out
to vehicle leasing operators and their subcontractors.
As such, Queensland Police often sets design
and engineering benchmarks for many specialized
vehicle modifications and adaptations required
for various types of police work, some of which
are adopted interstate.
Isuzu Ute Australia managing director Hitoshi
Kono said he was particularly pleased with the
relationship established with Queensland Police
and appreciated working with their engineering
experts to optimise D-MAX for their various police
work roles.
